UTA rallies for 3-2 win

The Sam Houston softball appeared ready to complete a series sweep of Southland Conference leader UT-Arlington on the Mavericks' home field Saturday.

But UTA rallied for three runs including the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth for a 3-2 victory.

Shortstop Hailey Wiginton and left fielder Alex Survant both went 2-for-3 , each with an RBI, to lead the Bearkats in the team's attempt for a third consecutive upset. Sam Houston defeated UTA 2-0 and 2-1 Friday afternoon.

Wiginton started the game with a lead-off solo home run to right field in the top of the first inning. Wiginton also scored the Kats' second run as she singled in the third inning. Survant singled to center field to score Wiginton.

Maverick center field Stephanie Gonzalez tied the contest with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Then, in the bottom of the sixth, third baseman Taylor Zink brought in the winning run with a single to right field.

Tomi Garrison (14-15), who won the first game and earned the save in Sam Houston's two victories Friday, took the loss in the circle Saturday. Garrison gave up seven hits in six innings, striking out two batters.

Tori Lyles was the winning pitcher for UTA.

Sam Houston State came into Saturday's action in sixth place in the Southland Conference standings. Only the top six finishers in the final regular season standings earn berths in the league tournament to be played at Bearkat Softball Complex Thursday through Saturday, May 12-14.

The Kats have two opportunities to nail down one of those six berths as they close out the regular season with a pair of Southland series against Southeastern Louisiana next weekend in Huntsville and Central Arkansas on the road the following week.
