Gatlin averaged 6.8 points per game for coach Johnny Estelle on a 20-10 squad as a freshman at Navarro. Gatlin will have three years of eligibility at Sam Houston. He produced a 3.8 grade point average as well.
"We are truly excited to sign Demarcus, a true student-athlete who excels both on the floor and in the class room," Hooten said. "Demarcus is a real stat-cruncher. He can score, rebound, make steals and is a good passer. He has played for two great coaches in both high school and junior college. To have him as part of our program the next three years in outstanding."
Gatlin was an All-District selection for Coach Ronnie Courtney at Bush High School in Houston. He averaged 13.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game as he led the team to the Texas Class 5A state championship and a 35-4 record.
"All through the recruiting process we coveted what Demarcus could bring to our program as a student-athlete. A lot like Josten Crow, he is a high character young man that has a very high ceiling," Hooten said. "He is a winner and the type of young man that you want representing your program, university and community. He will be able to step in and help us on both sides of the court."
