
Ryan Mooney hitter of week

Mooney is the second Bearkat to earn league baseball weekly honors this season. Brandon Kimbrell received pitcher of the week honors on April 4. Carson Smith of Texas State was this week's pitcher of the week while Kimbrell received honorable mention honors.
- Texas State right-handed pitcher Carson Smith has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week and Sam Houston State second baseman Ryan Mooney has been named the conference hitter of the week, the league office announced Monday.
Mooney helped lead the Bearkats to a 4-0 week that included a three-game sweep of Stephen F. Austin, which entered the series tied with Texas State for the league lead.
The senior from The Woodlands, Texas (The Woodlands), was 8-for-17 last week with four doubles and two runs batted in. He had a slugging percentage of .706 and an on-base percentage of .526 to help Sam Houston to its firsts sweep of the Lumberjacks since they resumed playing baseball in 2006.
He was 3-for-5 in each of the final two games of the series, including the finale when he had two of his four doubles. For the season, Mooney leads the team with a .357 batting average. Sam Houston State has won its last four games to improve to 33-17 overall and 16-11 in the Southland, which has the Bearkats in third place.
Sam Houston State takes a break for finals this week then heads to Conway, Ark., for the Bearkats' next-to-last Southland series of the year. Sam Houston and Central Arkansas will begin the series Friday with a 6 p.m. game, then play on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
The regular season will wrap up for the Bearkats with a series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday, May 19, through Saturday, May 21.
The series marks the final home appearance for Sam Houston head coach Mark Johnson who is retiring at the end of the 2011 season. Game times for the series are 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Johnson, who last year became only the 44th head coach in NCAA Division I baseball history to post more than 1,000 victories, will be honored in a special pre-game ceremony on Friday, May 20.
