Washington State defeated Sam Houston 25-17 21-25 25-20 25-18 Saturday night to win the team championship at the Cougar Challenge volleyball tournament.
WSU won all three of its matches in the event. The Bearkats defeated Manhattan and lost to Washington State and San Francisco to finish third in the tournament.
Kaylee Hawkins and Kelli Stewart of Sam Houston were named to the all-tournament team. Hawkins led the Bearkats with 13 kills in Saturday's four-set loss to Washington State.
The Cougar's Meagan Ganzer, who earned tournament "Most Valuable Player" honors, led Washington State in the win over Sam Houston with 21 kills. Hawkins led the Bearkats for the week in both attacking and digs.
Haley Neisler, Kendall Cleveland and Kim Black also helped power the Bearkats' offense Saturday. Neisler totaled eight kills, Cleveland seven and Black six with Neisler and Black pacing the front line both with four blocks apiece.
Setter Kym Loving totaled 30 assists as Sam Houston totaled 44 kills. The senior became the seventh player in Bearkat volleyball history to record more than 3,000 career assists this weekend.
Sam Houston battled in each of the four sets with six lead changes in the second set, four in the third and 12 in the final frame. While the Cougars never trailed in the first set, the frame was tied four times.
The loss dropped Sam Houston to 6-5 for the season while Washington State upped its season mark to 8-2.
Other members of the all-tournament team were Vendula Strakova (USF), Camryn Irwin (WSU), Jocelyn Levig (USF) and Rachel Todorovich (WSU).
Next up for Sam Houston State is the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack Invitational Tournament in Nacogdoches next Friday and Saturday.
