Midfielder Emily Edenstrom became Sam Houston State's first winner of a Southland Conference women's soccer weekly honor this season Tuesday as the sophomore from Wiley was named as the league's "Offensive Player of the Week."
Edenstrom was a key part in Bearkat offense last weekend, recording goals in both of the Bearkats' contests. She scored one goal and assisted on a second in Sam Houston's 4-1 victory over Grambling State on Friday and tallied the lone goal in the Bearkats' game at Rice on Sunday. The junior midfielder ended the weekend with a total of four shots on goal.
Central Arkansas's Julie Foerster was Southland "Defensive Player of the Week" and the Bears' Kelsey Gochnauer was named league "Goalkeeper of the Week."
In her second season as a starter for the Bearkats, Edenstrom has scored five goals and been credited with five assists in her two-year college career.
Three Sam Houston soccer players earned Southland Conference weekly honors a year ago with Jenny Pence being named league "Goalkeeper of the Week" on Sept. 7 and Kirby Zak and Tricia Mallory receiving "Offensive Player of the Week" honors on Oct. 12 and Oct. 19, respectively.
The Sam Houston soccer team completes a two-week, five-match road swing this Friday night when the Bearkats travel to Denton to face North Texas in a 7 p.m. match.
The Kats' next home soccer match is Sunday afternoon as Sam Houston hosts Texas Southern at 1 p.m. at Joseph Pritchett Field.
