HBU knocks off Kats in five

Despite four Bearkats totaling double figure kills, Houston Baptist won a five-set thriller over Sam Houston in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday night at HBU's Sharp Gymnasium.

The Huskies won over the Kats 25-21 17-25 25-16 20-25 15-13 to up their season record to 6-2. Sam Houston, playing its third match in a row without its offensive leader Carli Kolbe, fell to 5-3.

University of Arkansas transfer Kendall Cleveland took over to spearhead the SHSU offensive attack, totaling 19 kills. Kellie Stewart added 14 and Haley Neisler and Kim Black each posted 10 kills.

Through the five sets of action, Sam Houston totaled 62 kills as a team to 53 for Houston Baptist. But errors hurt the Bearkat cause as SHSU committed 31 attack errors to just 14 for HBU.

Catti Wenger led Houston Baptist with 13 kills. Sam Houston is the third Southland Conference member HBU has defeated. In the past two weeks the Huskies also downed Lamar and last year's Southland post-season tournament winner UTSA.

Sam Houston continues its road swing playing in tournaments at Washington State University and Stephen F. Austin the next two weekends.

Central Arkansas will be the Bearkats' next home opponent on Thursday, Sept. 21 in a 7 p.m. match at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
