Enjoying the Moment

With the national championship game waiting in the near future, both Sam Houston and North Dakota State took a break from preparations for a little fun on Thursday.
From visiting local elementary schools to mixing it up with a little laser tag, arcade games and some bowling, the Bearkats and the Bison were able to unwind a bit.
"It was definitely nice. We were able to enjoy the atmosphere for once," Sam Houston running back Ryan Wilson said. "We had some fun today, but tomorrow and Saturday, we get back to business."
Following their morning practice session, the Bearkats took a road trip to visit Robertson Elementary in nearby Little Elm, while the Bison visited Bright Elementary in Frisco.
Arriving in their buses, the Bearkats were greeted to cheers from school children, who waived pom-poms and also created signs that they made.
"It was great. It was very humbling," Wilson said. "To see all the kids out there who didn't know who we were, but just to see the support and the enthusiasm they showed, it was just a great experience."
Sam Houston head coach Willie Fritz, with his players standing behind him, addressed the students talking about the value of education.
Fritz also answered questions, including one being if the Kats had played the University of Texas.
After taking a moment, Fritz replied, "Well, I think Texas has lost six games and we haven't lost any," which drew laughs from the crowd.
Later on, the Bearkats and the Bison had an evening of fun at Main Event. The two teams enjoyed barbecue, courtesy of Main Event, and played arcade games before taking part in the bowling tournament.
To find out who would play in the tournament, the Sam Houston players competed in a tournament in Huntsville. That practice paid off as the Bearkats won the inaugural Barbecue Bowling tournament 116-102.
"It was a very fun night," Sam Houston offensive lineman Kaleb Hopson said. "We had meetings earlier and practice, so it was good to unwind. It was nice to relax so everybody doesn't burn out from focusing on the game. We're just ready for the game to come."
Both teams now have just one more day to get everything just right before the 2012 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game gets under way Saturday at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco at noon.
"It was fun to have fun and get along with the other guys (from North Dakota State), but that's just for tonight," Wilson added. "Right now, it's all about fun. We're enjoying the moment, but we're ready for the game in two days."
