Women 2nd & men 6th in Southland cross country

The Sam Houston women produced their highest league finish since 2000 and the Bearkat men posted their best conference standing in the past four years Friday morning at the Southland Conference Cross Country championships hosted by Lamar University in Beaumont.
The women were runners-up in the team competition, plaching only two points behind league champion Stephen F. Austin in the closest finish to a Southland cross country race since 1994.
The Kats had five runners finish among the top 16 individual women.
Junior Alyssa Dooley finished second overall on the 6K course with a time of 21:07.06, just eight seconds back of the individual champion Lauren Smith of SFA. The Flower Mound, Texas (Marcus), native finished 14th at last year's championships.
Other Bearkat finishers include Solenn Riou seventh (21:57.07), Ana Moreno eighth (21:58.06), Nicole Aponte 16th (22:28.03), Haley West 25th (22:52.03), and Haleight Ceballos 66th (27:16.05).
Freshman Zach Goodlander led the way for the sixth place Bearkat men at the 2012 Southland Cross Country Championships. The New Waverly, Texas (Willis), native Goodlander ran the 8K course in 25:40.02.
Goodlander's time placed him 31st at the event. Other Bearkat finishers include Karl Schreiber 34th (25:48.05), Patrick Pitts 36th (25:55.02), Ryan Saam 38th (26:03.06), Logan Terry 39th (26:05.05), Clint Anders 40th (26:08.02), Patrick Krol 47th (26:30.01), and Palo Ponce 51st (26:38.04).
McNeese State won the team title by having the top three individual finishers. The hosts, Lamar finished second followed by Stephen F. Austin, A&M-Corpus Christi, and Central Arkansas.
