Volleyball Hosts SFA Thursday

The Bearkats'
bitter rivals Stephen F. Austin come to town Thursday night for a matchup of
top Southland teams.
Sam Houston sits in
third in the league with a 4-2 SLC record and they have won their last three.
The second place Lumberjacks are 5-1 in conference play after losing their last
match to the league-leading Central Arkansas.
The Kats are led offensively
by Deveney Wells-Gibson, who has the second most kills in the conference at
234. The sophomore also ranks third in the league with 3.77 kills per set this
year. Junior Tayler Gray leads the Kats in assists this year with 625 and ranks
third in the league with 10.08 assists per set.
SFA's offense is
paced by Jill Ivy's 221 kills this season and Paige Holland's 715 assists. The
Jacks' Cara Leslie has twice been named as Southland Player of the Week. Leslie
has 112 kills and 55 blocks and is averaging one block per set.
Sam Houston's last
loss was at the hands of the Jacks as they edged the Bearkats in five sets on
Sept. 18. During the first four sets, there were 26 ties and 10 lead changes.
But SFA jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the fifth set and never trailed on
the way to clinching the match. Jill Ivy, who led the Jacks with 18 kills, got
the winning attack on match point. Deveney Wells-Gibson led Sam Houston with 22
kills.
The match starts at
7 p.m. at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum. The Kats are back in action Saturday as they host Northwestern State at 2 p.m.
