
Davis earns Southland gold

Morgan Davis, Allyson Pettit and Josh Sigmon were the first athletes to compete for SHSU track and field in the Southland Indoor Championships, and they opened the competition on a high note.
Morgan Davis took first place in the pentathlon with a point total of 3,641, the second highest point total in school history. She came into the event ranked in third place.
Davis opened the pentathlon with a fourth place finish in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.99 (912). She then set a indoor personal best in the high jump with a 5-5 jump for second place (795).
In the shot put she threw for an indoor personal record with a 36-5.5 for fifth place (602). In the long jump Davis held steady to tie her indoor personal record with a 17-1.5.
Going into the final event of the competition, the 800 meter run, Davis was in second place. However, she ran faster than Mariah Georgetown of McNeese state who had held the lead, to take the gold medal in the event.
Allyson Pettit also scored for the Kats by taking eighth in the event behind three personal bests. She took second in the 60 meter hurdles (8.89), third in the high jump (5-3.75) and an indoor personal record in the 800 meter run.
Josh Sigmund sits in third place after day one of the men's heptathlon with 2,915 total points.
He started the meet with a personal record in the 60 meter dash of 7.3 seconds for fourth place (779). In the long jump Sigmund hit another personal record of 22-5.75 in his final jump for 778 points.
In the shot put Sigmund threw 43-3.75 in the shot put for second place (679) and in the final event of day one of the competition, the high jump, Sigmund finished fourth with a jump of 6-1.25 (679),
Eight Sam Houston athletes qualified Friday for the finals of their running events Saturday.
Charles White took fifth in the long jump (23-11) and Sunday Foster took seventh. Trevor Sealy also took sixth in the weight throw (56-11.25).
Both the men's and women's distance medley relay finished in fifth place.
Qualifying for the finals of Saturday's running events were Sunday Foster (200 meters), Simbi George (400 meters), Alyssa Dooley (mile), Sabrina Starr (60 meter hurdles) and Pashe Moore (60 meter hurdles) for the Bearkat women.
For the men, Matt Buegeler (200 meters), Trey Jones (400 meters) and Brian Helaire (400 meters) qualified for the finals.
