The Bearkat women already have clinched a berth in the tournament but involved in a heated battle for seeding.
The men find themselves in a three-way dog fight for two remaining berths in the post-season event.
On the women's side, Central Arkansas, McNeese, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston, Texas State and Lamar all have clinched playoff berth. The Bearkats and the Lumberjacks, currently tied for the number three position in the seeding, battle Wednesday night in Nacogdoches in a matchup that could determine who nails down the three seed.
This year will mark the third consecutive appearance in the Southland tournament for the women since Coach Brenda Nichols' 2010 team ended a five-year tournament drought.
On the men's side, UT-Arlington, McNeese State, Stephen F. Austin, Lamar, UTSA and Northwestern State are the six teams already with tournament berths.
Nicholls (6-8), Sam Houston (6-8) and Texas State (5-9) are the three teams competing for the final two spots. Sam Houston holds the tiebreaker edge over Nicholls and meets Texas State head-to-head Saturday in San Marcos.
Coach Jason Hooten's Bearkats earned Sam Houston its ninth consecutive tournament berth in 2011 and advanced to the tournament semifinals.
