Sam Houston State women's basketball plays host to Southeastern Louisiana in an important Southland Conference women's basketball game Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Bearkats stand one-half game out of first place in the West Division with a 10-9 season mark and a 5-3 record in league play. The Lions are tied for fourth in the East with a 7-13 overall record and a 2-5 slate in Southland action.
The Sam Houston are looking to bounce back from a tough road loss at McNeese State last Wednesday when the Cowgirls won 57-48.
Britni Martin, Sequeena Thomas and Angela Beadle all scored in double figures. Martin led the team with 14 points. Thomas pulled down a season high 19 rebounds and scored 13 points. Beadle added 11 points and eight rebounds.
The big difference in the game came at the free throw line with McNeese was 10-of-15 while Sam Houston ended 4-of-7. McNeese also forced 18 SHSU turnovers while the Cowgirls committed only 10 miscues.
"We made too many mistakes in the second half," head coach Brenda Nichols said. "We need to stay focused and play with intensity for 40 minutes. Every game counts right now as we reach the mid-point of the Southland Conference schedule."
Martin and Thomas continue to lead the Bearkat women.
Martin is averaging 15.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists. The junior has posted 15 double-figure scoring performances including a season best of 30 points on the road against SFA.
Thomas is averaging 13.9 points and leads the Southland Conference with 11.3 rebounds per game this season. She owns a five-game streak of games with both double figure opints and rebounds to five. She has 11 double-doubles this season.
Chanice Smith is averaging 8.0 points per game and Khamra Echols continues to bring the Kats a strong backcourt performer. Jasmine Johnson is averaging 7.9 points and 7.0 rebounds as a sophomore starter. Beadle is averaging 7.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest.
