Final Home Game Saturday
3/1/2012 5:56:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The Bearkat women play host to Texas State at 2 p.m. in the final regular season game of the 2012 season.
With an 11-4 league mark, Sam Houston State already has clinched at least a tie for its second consecutive Southland West Division championship. The Kats will be the number three seed at the Southland Conference tournament starting Tuesday at the Merrell Center in Katy.
Khamra Echols from Skyline High School in Dallas and Devin Wombles from Rockport, Illinois, are the only two seniors on the 2012 squad.
The team will be making its 12th Southland post-season appearance this year. The Bearkat women earned a number four seed in 1989, 1996, 1997 and 1999 but have never been seeded higher.
The 16-10 record this season and last year's 17-14 mark are a big chance from the 9-20 record Sam Houston posted in 2009 when Echols came to the program as a walk-on.
Echols will be making her 104th appearance in a Bearkat uniform Saturday. She owns career totals of 602 points, 311 assists and 169 steals. Her 311 assists rank her sixth all-time at Sam Houston.
Wombles joined the Bearkat program last season as a transfer from John Wood College where she earned All-Midwest Conference honors. She will be playing in her 37th game as a Bearkat.
The Sam Houston women come into Saturday's game with a three-game winning streak after victories over Northwestern State, Lamar and Stephen F. Austin. The Bearkats have won six of their last seven games and are 10-1 this season on their home floor.
The SHSU women will be looking to settle a score with Texas State. The Bobcats are responsible for one of the Kats' four Southland losses this season, defeating SHSU 66-53 in San Marcos on January 18.
Tickets for Sam Houston's home finale Saturday with the Bobcats and for the Southland Conference tournament in Katy next week are available on line at www.gobearkats.com/tickets or at the Sam Houston State ticket office located in the Ron Mafrige Field House.
