The Sam Houston athletic ticket office has been busy filling orders for 2012 football season tickets even as the schedule for next fall is being finalized.
In addition to securing renewals for season tickets, deposits have already been put down for 150 new season tickets for the reserved chairbacks. For this fall's campaign, season tickets will be $235 for reserved chairbacks, down from $275 in 2011, and $85 for season tickets in bleachers, decreased from $100.
"We've also been accepting deposits for next year," SHSU associate athletic director David Paitson said. "We've sent mailings out to about 5,000 individual-game buyers. Thus far, we have 150 deposits for 150 new season chairback seats. That's a pretty firm commitment."
Those who were season-ticket holders last season can expect to receive an invoice this week to renew.
"We are in the process of season-ticket sales, so we'll be dropping out our invoice to current season-ticket holders," Paitson said. "We'll have a due date for renewals of April 27. (Season-ticket holders) will have about five or six weeks to get back to us on that."
Since there will only be three home games, season-ticket packages will cover the three regular-season games at Bowers Stadium as well as a ticket to the Battle of the Piney Woods game against the Lumberjacks, which is scheduled for Oct. 6, and the option for guaranteed tickets for the nonconference games against Baylor (Sept. 15), Texas Southern (Sept. 22) and Texas A&M (Nov. 17).
"Another thing for them is on the package, we will have the three games and the Piney Woods game and a DVD, which will be primarily based around the football season last year and championship run, as a gift," Paitson said. "What will also be on there that we're working through the details now is that we will give season-seat holders the option to purchase tickets for the game at (BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston against Texas Southern), the game at Baylor and the game at (Texas) A&M. In essence, as a season-seat holder, if they do that add-on, they'll be guaranteed seats for those games."
Before the summer, fans will also be able to choose where they want to sit for the upcoming season.
"Somewhere early to mid-May, we will be doing an open house, where those folks who put down deposits, will be able to come in and see where their seats are located. I think it will be a fun thing to do, too," Paitson said.
When the Bearkats kick off the 2012 season nerxt September, Bowers Stadium will look a little different.
A project will be under way this summer to replace the chairback seats that are located on the home side of Bowers between the 30-yard lines. New, brightly colored seats will be installed and upgraded with cupholders.
"We are doing a few new things. Our chairback seats are coming out and we're putting in all-new chairbacks," Paitson said. "We'll have them in prior to this upcoming season, so we'll have it done over the summer. They'll be modern with cupholders and a Sam Houston logo on the side of each seat. It'll make a striking difference with how things look and are presented.
"It's a long-term step. The other difference about them is that it will actually be a wider seat. It will be a 22-inch-wide seat as opposed to a 20-inch-wide seat. It's going to give more room to the customer, so it's just going to make it better.
"On the flip side, what that means is that we're going to lose some seats. We will decrease our numbers (of chairback reserve seats) from 1,040 to 976. It may take rearranging a couple of customers, but we think that will be very minimal. That means we'll have a little less inventory, which means the demand will be a little bit higher."
There are also future projects that Williams has in mind to further upgrade Sam Houston's facilities, including Johnson Coliseum, Don Sanders Stadium and the Bearkat Softball Complex.
"Our first priority is to replace the chairbacks. Then hopefully within a year, expand those. Eventually, I'd like to have it all the way across, based on demand," he said.
"The video board is a priority. We're trying to find a way to get a new video board, not only (at Bowers Stadium), but at (Johnson) Coliseum and at baseball and move that one to softball. Those are immediate-type deals that we're working on.
"The other two projects that we're working on is the Events Center and the renovation of the (Bowers Stadium) press box. Those are long-term because the costs of those are in the millions.
"We've got a plan for the next five years. What it's going to come down to is our fans and alumni are funding a lot of these. With what David's group has put in place the last few years in raising sponsorships, ticket sales, getting active with and continuing to cultivate more donors, we need to multiply that in a high, high number.
"We're hoping to capitalize on the success of the team to do that. It's going to pay for these things because our main season-ticket holders, our students, have been doing more than their share."
