Smith tossed a one-hitter in Sam Houston's first complete game of the season in leading the Bearkats to a 2-1 series-clinching victory against Nicholls State on Sunday.
The second hitter he faced got a single, but the next 29 batters he faced went hitless. The sophomore left-hander from Huntsville, Texas (Huntsville H.S.), allowed one unearned run and finished the game with five strikeouts, three walks and a hit batsman.
Smith improved to 2-2 on the year and manages a 2.03 earned-run average in five starts this season. He leads the team with 25 strikeouts.
The Bearkats begin a six-game home stand at Don Sanders Tuesday night when Sam Houston plays host to the Baylor Bears at 6:30 p.m. Next Southland action for the Kats will be a three game series with Texas State beginning this Friday.
