Men roll at Rice

The team earned forty points behind twelve top eight finishes at the meet.
"Honestly we didn't even know they were going to score the meet," said Coach Dave Self. "That we were able to do so well speaks to the strength of how well our men did."
Charles White highlighted action for the Kats as he leapt his way to a meet championship in the triple jump. His 49-9.75 mark bested his dual meet jump by nearly five feet.
"Charles was actually struggling early," said Self. "He had to put in a safety mark just to make the triple finals. Then he managed to put in three really good attempts in the finals."
Karique Stephen also took sixth in the event (46-1.5).
The 4x100 meter relay was a bright spot for the Kats once again as the Henry Jordan, DJ Hayes, Matt Buegeler and Jarrick Wright took second in the race with a season best time of 40.64.
"That was a really great run for them," said Self. "A couple of them had tough prelims before the relay which is pretty rare. For those guys to come out after competing and still improve the relay says a lot."
Hayes and Matthew Viverette both ran their way to top five finishes in the 400 meter hurdles. Viverette took third with his second personal record of the season (52.43) and Hayes finished fifth with a time of 53.64.
Viverette also earned third place in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.37.
Trevor Sealy was another standout performer for the Bearkats. He threw the hammer 178-6 to finish second in the event.
"Trevor's come on as a walk on for us and has done a really good job," said Self. "He's done a lot of hard work and the benefits are starting to show."
The 4x400 meter relay team of Trey Jones, Brian Helaire, DJ Hayes and Matt Buegeler demolished their time from the SHSU/SFA dual meet by over four seconds. Their mark of 3:11.40 was good enough for fourth place in the event.
Finishing in the top six for the Kats were Jordan in the long jump (23-7.25), Jones in the 400 meter dash (48.33) and Patrick Krol in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:17.43).
Ryan Oakes also took seventh in the pole vault, clearing 16-2.75.
The next action for both track and field teams will be next weekend at the Texas Relays in Austin.
