"What we're really trying to focus on with this year is just really, really maximizing the individual performances, because that's how you do it in track," coach Dave Self said. "We need everyone to perform their best at the conference meet."
Sophomore Matthew Viverette holds the second best conference mark in two events for the Kats and could compete for multiple individual championships.
"Basically I want to medal," Viverette said. "I'm not overly concerned with time as I am place. I am glad I finally get to race against Hayes though if I make finals in both. We will see what the Lord holds in store for me on Saturday."
Vivette has run 14.13 in the 110 meter hurdles and 51.25 in the 400 meter hurdles, about a second away from Lane Dennis's school record in the event.
Senior DJ Hayes is also ranked in the 400 meter hurdles, as well as in three other events. He could be a big part in scoring points for the Bearkats in the championship.
Hayes ranks third in the conference so far in the 400 meter dash and is the all-time record holder for Sam Houston in the event with a time of 45.93. Trey Jones also sits sixth in the event (47.41) and Jesse Martinez stands tenth (47.83).
Hayes is also a key part of the Kats two relays.
In the 4x400 meter relay the Bearkats rank third. Hayes has teamed with Jones, Brain Helaire and Martinez for a season best time of 3:09.30.
Hayes is also part of the 4x100 meter relay that sits fourth in the conference. Henry Jordan, Hayes, Matt Buegeler and Jarrick Wright will look to improve their season best time of 40.64.
Wright and Jordan also look to make some noise in the individual 100 meter dash. Wright ranks third with a time of 10.48 and Jordan sits fifth at 10.54.
Wright is also a threat to score in 200 meter dash where he ranks seventh.
Jordan also ranks in the top three in the long jump with a leap of 24-6.25.
"My goals going into conference are to have the best championship meet I've ever had," said the senior. "I want to compete well for the conference championship in the long jump and I really want take home multiple medals. I really want to hit some PR's in all my events."
Tied with Jordan in the long jump is Charles White. White is also ranked second in the triple jump with a mark of 49-9.75.
Karique Stephen also sits in the top five in the triple jump with a mark of 49-2.5.
Also entering the meet in the runner-up position is Trevor Sealy in the hammer. Sealy has thrown for 192-7 this season, about four feet off the leading conference mark.
"I feel really confident coming in," said Sealy. "There are two other guys throwing up about where I am, so it will be a really good meet and a really good competition."
While Sam Houston brings a relatively young team, Jordan advises his younger teammates to keep their emotions in check.
"I tell them to enjoy themselves," said Jordan. "I tell them all year to train as hard as you can so when it's all said and done you can look back on your career and be proud of it no matter the results. For this meet it's about balancing emotions and not getting too hyped. Just bear down do what you know how to do and celebrate after."
Also ranked in the top ten going into the meet for SHSU are Ryan Oakes (fourth, pole vault; tenth, decathlon), Preston Sanders (fifth, shot put), Freddy Arellano (seventh, 800 meters), Patrick Krol (eight, 3000 meter steeplechase) and Cody Feazell (tenth, pole vault).
