Sam Houston State football will appear before a regional television audience again this weekend when the Bearkats take on Central Arkansas in Conway Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Bearkats versus the Bears clash will be televised by the Southland Conference Television Network. The local area outlet for the telecast will be KUBE Channel 57 from Houston.
In Huntsville the KUBE is viewed on channel 15 on Sudden Link Cable.
The Southland Conference Television Network is ushering in its fifth season with coverage of the Sam Houston State at Central Arkansas football game.
The Bearkats won last year's game 31-10 in Huntsville and neither team lost again during the regular season.
Both teams reached the NCAA Division I playoffs. Sam Houston won the conference championship with a 7-0 record to claim the league's automatic berth and finished the year 14-1 after reaching the national championship game. UCA was 6-1 in conference play and earned an at-large bid into the playoffs, where it won its first Division I playoff game on its way to a 9-4 finish overall.
Sam Houston has won its last nine conference games dating back to the 2010 season, while UCA has won its last six league games.
The Bearkats are off to a 1-1 start in 2012, opening with a 54-7 victory over future Southland Conference foe Incarnate Word Sept. 8. Last week, Sam Houston led at Baylor 20-10 at the half and trailed only 24-23 in the fourth quarter before falling 48-23.
Running back Tim Flanders has 201 yards and two touchdowns in two games, while quarterback Brian Bell has completed 32 of 58 passes for 442 yards and three scores. Receiver Trey Diller has reeled in seven catches for 94 yards to pace the receivers. Sam Houston is averaging 447.5 yards per game, in a balanced offense that is averaging 226.5 yards on the ground and 221 passing yards. Jesse Beauchamp has 12 tackles to lead a defense that is limiting opponents to just 316 yards per game, including just 93 yards rushing.
Central Arkansas is 2-1 this season and has won its last two games. The Bears opened the season with a 49-27 loss at Ole Miss, but have rebounded to win at Murray State 42-20 before defeating Bacone College 70-3 last week in the home opener.
Quarterback Wynrick Smothers has completed 72 of 92 passes for 784 yards and 10 touchdowns. Dezmin Lewis, who two touchdowns on special teams and added a receiving touchdown last week against Bacone, is the team's leading receiver with 17 receptions for 117 yards and three scores. Running back Willie Matthews has 159 yards on 11 carries and has scored one touchdown for the Bears. UCA is averaging 447.7 yards of offense per game, including 286.7 yards passing and 161 yards rushing. Justin Heard is the team's leading tackler with 25. The Bears defense is holding opponents to only 111 rushing yards and 292.7 yards through the air.
Saturday's game will be the seventh all-time meeting between the teams. Each team has won three games in the series that dates back to only 2006. Central Arkansas won the first three games, but Sam Houston State has won each of the last three years.
Randy McIlvoy, the sports director at KPRC-TV in Houston, will handle play-by-play duties and will be joined in the booth by color analyst Shea Walker, a former Texas A&M receiver and veteran broadcaster for the last 18 years. Erin Cofiell will serve as the sideline reporter.
The Southland TV Network became a reality in 2008 and has broadcast more than 100 events.
