Family Weekend has history of exciting games
9/6/2012 7:00:00 AM | Football
Sam Houston celebrates its 27th Bearkat Family football weekend when the Bearkats play host to the Cardinals from the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio.
The contest kicks off at 6 p.m. Saturday at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium
The Bearkat Family Weekend contests have been some of the most exciting in Sam Houston football history. In fact, even Mother Nature has gotten involved in the action.
In 2005, the Parents/Family Weekend matchup with Missouri State was canceled due to Hurricane Rita. Again, in 2008, Hurricane Ike forced cancelation of the Sam Houston-Prairie View A&M game.
When there hasn't been a real hurricane, Parents/Family Weekend usually has provided an offensive storm on the field.
The average amount of points scored in the 25 previous events has been 45.5. Nine times, Sam Houston and the Bearkats' opponent have combined to score more than 50 points.
Last year's Family Weekend saw Sam Houston roll up one of its most important victories of the season, a 31-10 win over Central Arkansas. The loss was the only blemish on UCA's Southland Conference record as the Bears went on to earn an NCAA Division I playoff berth and advance to the second round. The victory over UCA started the Kats to a 7-0 run in league play and an undisputed Southland title.
Several Bearkat Family Weekend Games have been shoot-outs including a 48-45 win over North Dakota State in 2009 as the Kats nipped the Bison on a late field goal.
A complete listing of Parents/Family Weekend results follows this story.
The 6 p.m. event at Bowers Stadium will feature the Bearkat band's traditional march from the SHSU Mall to the Bearkat Alley tailgate, a special antique car show and the third annual "Hillcrest Ford Heroes" halftime salute to military veterans and Walker County police and fire department emergency service personnel.
Tailgate begins at 4 p.m. Gates open at 4:30 p.m.
