Freshman Shannon Shields' second-half goal didn't hold up as they lost 2-1 in overtime to Oral Roberts. A controversial refereeing decision proved to be the crucial turning point in the game.
The Eagles were awarded a penalty in the 75th minute after the attacking player appeared to pull down the Bearkat defender. Before the penalty, Sam Houston (6-7-1, 4-4 SLC) had been controlling the game and had the bulk of the possession in the second half.
Shields got on the end of a header from sophomore Ashley Alonzo less than five minutes after halftime and slotted it into the net. The freshman is second on the team with four goals this season and has scored in back-to-back games.
Each team fired 18 shots in the game and SHSU goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton made seven saves.
ORU 'keeper Maddie Rhodes had to make just five saves in 102 minutes.
Jordan Parsons scored the game-winner for the Eagles. She headed a cross from Tahlor Lyman into the top corner past Hambleton.
The Kats close out the home stand next week with A&M-Corpus Christi Friday at 7 p.m. and Southeastern Louisiana Sunday at 1 p.m.
