The Sam Houston State soccer team will return to Pritchett Field Sunday with a Southland Conference showdown with rival Stephen F. Austin. The Bearkats (4-5-1, 2-1 SLC) will first play at Northwestern State Friday at 7 p.m.
Pregame festivities Sunday include a “Free Food Tailgate” before the 1 p.m. contest with food provided by Pita Pit. The first 100 students in attendance will receive free Pita Pit.
Coming off a thrilling overtime win at McNeese State last week, the Kats are looking to climb up the league standings. Northwestern State is close to SHSU in the standings with a 1-2-1 SLC record.
“The Northwestern State game will be important for us,” Bearkat head coach Tom Brown said. “This will be our fourth game on the road and we've done better than we traditionally have on the road. It will be important for us to go on the road and steal some points.”
SFA poses a tough test for the Kats having won the league title the last two seasons. The LadyJacks are 2-1 in Southland play and have beaten LSU this season 4-0.
The Kats are looking forward to playing back at Pritchett Field where they have won all six games since the new artificial surface was installed last season. SHSU has outscored opponents 17-1 in that span.
“We're obviously excited about Stephen F,” said Brown. “The Battle of the Piney Woods game is always an important game for us. But having been on the road for so long we're just happy to be back home.”
Sunday's game at Pritchett Field starts at 1 p.m. The five games to follow will also be played at home starting with Lamar Friday, Oct. 11.
