Late goal gives Kats 1-0 win

HOUSTON -- Midfielder Shelby McDaniel buried a free kick in the 87th minute to lead the Sam Houston women' soccer team to a 1-0 win over Houston Baptist. The win clinched a spot in next week's Southland postseason tournament.

The Bearkats (8-9-1, 6-5 SLC) had been held in check for most of the game until McDaniel's driven free kick deflected off of a player in the wall and went low into  the corner of the net.

“We are excited about the win and qualifying for the conference tournament,” said Bearkat head coach Tom Brown. “We created some very good chances tonight. HBU played very well and pressed our defense hard.”

Goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton made nine saves in the game but none may have been bigger than the penalty kick she stopped with around 20 minutes left to play.

Nicholls State, SHSU's final regular season opponent, played to a 1-1 draw with Southeastern Louisiana at home tonight.

The Bearkats and Colonels play Sunday at 1 p.m. in Thibodaux, La.
