Bearkat women come close at UALR

Junior forward Angela Beadle scored 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds as Sam Houston State threw a scare into Arkansas-Little Rock before falling 69-65 in a non-conference women's basketball game in Little Rock Sunday afternoon.

Junior Jazmin Wiley and senior Jasmine Johnson also scored in double figures for the Bearkats. Wiley went 5-of-9 from the field for 14 points. Jasmine scored 11 points and added four assists.

The Trojans, six-time defending Sun Belt Conference West Division champions and, like Sam Houston, a WNIT post-season participant last year, were led in scoring by Kiera Clark with 19 points.

The contest saw seven ties and nine lead changes in the first 20 minutes. Sam Houston's largest lead was two points, the last time on a Wiley jumper than made the score 33-31 with 48 seconds remaining in the half. UALR led by one, 35-34, at intermission.

The Trojans opened the second period with a 13-2 run to go up by 12 points, 48-36. UALR still led by 12 with four minutes to play. But, led by Beadle, the Kats made a final charge with a 9-0 run to cut the margin to three, 67-64, on a Beadle lay-up with 2:02 to play.

Sam Houston missed two three-pointers and two free throws in the final two minutes as the Trojans held on for the win. The game was the season opener for UALR. The Bearkats are 0-2.

Freshman Taylor Dorsey scored nine points and had six rebounds. Amanda Barnes added five points.
