The Sam Houston women's team looks to continue its success on its home floor at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum Tuesday when the Bearkats play host to Houston Baptist at 6:30 p.m.
HBU is one of the new members of the Southland Conference and will be competing for the league title when conference play rolls around in January. Tuesday's game is a non-conference affair.
After going 0-2 on a season-opening road trip to face Arkansas and Arkansas-Little Rock the first weekend of the season, Sam Houston bounced back for an 83-73 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette Friday in the Kats' first home game.
Senior point guard Jasmine Johnson totaled a career best 31 points in the victory, becoming the tenth Bearkat woman to score 31 or more points in one game in more than 40 years of Sam Houston women's basketball.
Junior center Angela Beadle also posted a career best with 19 rebounds.
Three Bearkats average in double figures coming into Tuesday night's action. Johnson leads the team with 18.0 points per game while Beadle is scoring 14.7 and junior guard Jazmin Wiley is producing 10.3 points a contest.
Houston Baptist is 2-1 for the season with a 72-60 win over Texas-Arlington and an 88-77 victory over Southern Utah at home and an 82-70 loss on the road at Texas Southern.
Shanice Steenholdt, a 6-0 junior forward, leads the Huskies with 19.0 points per game. Rachel Arthur, a 5-7 sophomore guard, is posting 15.3 points per contest. Steenholdt led HBU with 21 points in their victory over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds Saturday.
Sam Houston leads the all-time women's basketball series with Houston Baptist three victories to one.
Tuesday's game is the first of two home appearances for Sam Houston at Johnson Coliseum this week. Friday morning at 11 a.m., the Bearkat women will play host to Texas A&M-Commerce in the annual “Pack the House” contest featuring a capacity crowd of Huntsville area elementary school students.
