Angela Beadle and Jazmin Wiley both scored 16 points to lead Sam Houston to an 85-64 non-conference women's basketball victory over Texas A&M-Commerce Friday afternoon at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The victory ups Sam Houston to 3-2 for the season while the Lions fall to 0-5. A crowd of 2,457 Huntsville area elementary school students watched the contest on “Pack the House” Day.
Beadle added 13 rebounds and Wiley pulled down 12 boards as the Kats out-rebounded the Lions 51-43.
Taylor Dorsey and Nyha Carter also scored in double figures for the SHSU women. Dorsey posted 13 points in her first start as a freshman. Wiley totaled 12 points.
Breanna Harris of A&M-Commerce led both teams with 27 points.
Sam Houston took control early. Taylor Dorsey broke a 10-10 tie five minutes into the game with three-pointer. That sparked an 11-2 run as Nyha Carter's free throws put the Kats up 21-12 with 13:23 go in the half.
The SHSU women's biggest first half lead was 14 points after a jumper by Jazmin Wiley to make the score 34-20 with 2:42 left in the period. Sam Houston led 38-27 at intermission.
The Bearkat women ran away in the final 20 minutes, out-scoring A&M-Commerce 47-37 in the final period. Sam Houston led by as many as 31 in the half.
Bearkat point guard Jasmine Johnson totaled 12 assists. The Kats hit 44.8 percent from the field with 30-of-67 shooting.
