In the process of leading Sam Houston to its third straight “Battle of the Piney Woods” victory over SFA at Reliant Stadium in Houston Saturday, several Bearkats added to their already impressive career totals.
Walter Payton Award candidate Timothy Flanders became one of only 10 players in FCS history to score more than 400 career points with his 11-yard touchdown in the first quarter of Saturday's 56-49 victory over SFA. Flanders now has totaled 402 points.
Flanders also moved into a tie for eighth place in FCS all-time rushing touchdowns. Flanders has scored 63 times on the ground to equal the marks of Jerome Felton (Furman, 2004-07) and David Dinkins (Morehead State, 1997-2000).
The senior from Midwest City, Oklahoma, ranks No. 16 in FCS career rushing with 5,253 yards. He owns 31 school records and nine Southland Conference marks.
Sam Houston's all-time passing and total offense leader quarterback Brian Bell produced the best passing performance of his career with 339 yards and 4 TDs (15, 4, 38 & 16 yards). His long throw was 56 yards to set up a score. The senior accounted for 383 total offense yards and guided Kats to 557 total offense yards.
The winningest QB in Sam Houston history now has 36 wins in 46 starts as a Bearkat. He has produced 1,032 yards total offense including 2 rushing TDs and 10 passing TDs in his four years of action against SFA in the rivalry game.
Bell climbed into fifth place in Southland Conference career touchdown passes (74) with four TD strikes Saturday. His 4 TD pass vs. SFA equaled his career record set earlier this year against Incarnate Word.
Wide receiver and wildkat back Richard Sincere moved up to No. 9 in Sam Houston career rushing (2,169). The senior also stands No. 5 in Bearkat all-purpose yards (3.468) and is No. 20 in career receiving at SHSU with 1,107 yards.
Two other Bearkats with four-figure career offensive totals brings the number of current SHSU players in 1,000-yard clubs to five on this year's squad. Senior wide receiver Torrance Williams stands No. 12 in SHSU career all-purpose yards (2,472) and No. 10 in career receiving (1,472). Running back and kick return specialist Keshawn Hill has career totals of 1,184 yards rushing and 1,834 all-purpose yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, All-Southland cornerback Bookie Sneed picked off his ninth career interception against SFA Saturday. Sneed stands seventh in SHSU career interceptions.
