Senior guard Jasmine Johnson and junior post player Angela Beadle each scored 12 points to lead Sam Houston as the Bearkat women fell to Arkansas 81-45 in the opening game of the 2013-14 season for both basketball teams.
Friday was “Elementary Day” at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville as the Hogs rank their record in home openers to 37-1.
Senior Nyha Carter added eight point and led the Kats with seven rebounds. Beadle pulled down five boards.
Sam Houston tied the score twice as junior Jazmin Wiley made it 2-2 at the 19:10 mark and Beadle tied the score 4-4 with a jumper half a minute later.
Jessica Jacks, who led Arkansas with 17 points, started a 10-0 run that put the Razorbacks up 14-4 six minutes later. Jacks also scored with 4:58 left before half to give Arkansas a 37-15 lead. The Kats never cut the margin to less than 20 the rest of the game.
Arkansas shot 50 percent from the floor (30-of-60) and out-rebounded the Bearkats 33-27. Sam Houston hit 16-of-43 from the field for 37 percent shooting. The Kats turned the ball over 24 times.
The Razorbacks led at halftime 45-25 and out-scored Sam Houston 36-20 in the second half.
Sam Houston takes on Arkansas-Little Rock Sunday at 2 p.m. in the second game of the team's weekend road trip. The Bearkats play their home opener at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum Friday, November 15, against the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns.
