Sam Houston's Jabari Peters and Terrance Motley both were named to the E-Tech Lumberjack Classic all-tournament team Saturday night at Nacogdoches.
The Bearkats came home from the event with two victories over top NCAA Division I men's basketball programs.
Sam Houston defeated James Madison 77-76 on Friday and Towson 67-55 on Saturday to run the Bearkats 2013-14 season record to 7-3. That's the best start for an SHSU men's basketball team since the Kats started the 2007-08 season 10-0.
Peters, a 6-4 Brooklyn, NY, native who joined the Bearkats as a transfer from Seward County Community College in Kansas, led Sam Houston with 44 points in the tournament.
He led the SHSU men in the James Madison tilt with 21 points including the game-winning three-point basket with 14 seconds remaining. For the tournament, Peters hit 5-of-9 treys and was 11-of-13 at the free throw line with five assists.
Motley, a 6-7 senior from Phoenix, Arizona, led Sam Houston with 14 points in the victory over Towson. He totaled 24 points for the tournament, a 12.0 points per game average.
Other players named to the all-tournament squad were Charles Cooke of James Madison, Jerrelle Benimon of Towson and Thomas Walkup and Desmond Haymon of Stephen F. Austin
At 7-3 a month into the 2013-14 campaign, the Bearkat men boast one of the top three non-conference records among Southland Conference teams. Stephen F. Austin is 8-2 and Incarnate Word is 7-1.
Peters stands No. 14 in the Southland in scoring with 13.4 points per game.
The Bearkats take a break for final exams this week before heading on the road Toledo for a game Saturday at 1 p.m. The contest ends a three-week, seven-game road swing for the Kats.
Sam Houston's next home game at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum is Saturday, Dec. 28, when SHSU plays host to LIU-Brooklyn at 4 p.m.
