For the Bearkat women, the runner-up finish represented a jump from eighth place in 2012 to second this year. Sam Houston's women had not placed this high since winning the title in 2007 and 2008. The Bearkats also were league runners-up in 2005 and 2006.
The Sam Houston men produced their highest Southland indoor point total in 26 years in the league with a score of 119.5. The second place finish equaled Sam Houston's previous top men's indoor performance (runner-ups in 2006).
The Bearkat men finished seventh last year in the indoor meet.
Gold medal performances by several Bearkat women produced school records as well.
Lygia Foreman, who finished as the third top scorer in the Southland meet Friday, set a new school mark in the 400 meters with a time of 54.74. The old record was 55.44 by Tiffany Singleton in 2006.
The distance medley relay quartet of Johanna Saellinen, Tonicia Wimberley, Nicole Aponte and Alyssa Dooley set a record with a mark of 12:09.53. The old mark was 12:17.45 in 2008.
Simbi George, Ruth Amaku, Taylor Sanders and Foreman won the 4x400 with a time of 3:18.15, bettering the old mark of 3:46.98 set in 2008.
Charles White tied as the meet's top men's scorer. Dooley was the women's fifth highest scorer.
Each student-athlete who earned either a first, second or third place medal earned All-Southland Conference honors
