Brian Helaire Earns Southland Honor

Sam Houston State junior Brian Helaire has been named as the Southland Conference Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
Helaire, a Houston, Texas (Cy-Creek H.S.), native, won two events at the Varsity Apartments Invitational hosted by Wichita State in Wichita, Kan.
The junior took home the crown in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.57. Helaire followed up with a victory as part of the 4x400 relay team in which the Bearkats clocked a time of 3:16.51.
He is the first Bearkat to win men's track athlete of the week this season.
Next action for the track and field team will be the Iowa State indoor meet this weekend in Ames, Iowa.
Sam Houston will complete the indoor regular season schedule with trips to Norman, Oklahoma, for the Sooner Indoor Feb. 16 and the Southland Conference Indoor Championships Feb. 22-23.
