The 2013 regular season co-champion Bearkats battled their way to the Southland tournament finals, falling 72-66 in a tight game Saturday afternoon at the Merrell Center in Katy.
Thomas and Beadle become only the third and fourth Sam Houston women's basketball players to earn all-tournament honors. Current Kat head coach Brenda Nichols and guard Andee Sheiron were selected all-tournament in 1989 and 1997, respectively.
Beadle tied her career scoring high with 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds in Sam Houston's 67-61 semifinal victory over No. 3 seed Lamar Friday. The win was the Kats' first in tournament play since 1997 and represented Sam Houston's third victory in 15 tries in league post season play since SHSU joined the Southland in 1987.
Thomas totaled 32 points and 30 rebounds in the Kats' two games in Katy. Her double figure scoring and rebounding performances in both the semifinals and finals upped her "double-double" totals to 21 for the 2013 season and 53 for her career, both Sam Houston school records.
The complete 2013 Southland Conference post-season all-tournament team is:
All-Tournament Team
Kevi Luper, Oral Roberts
Jaci Bigham, Oral Roberts
Angela Beadle, Sam Houston State
Sequeena Thomas, Sam Houston State
Ashlyn Baggett, McNeese State
Sam Houston State awaits the announcement Monday as to who the Bearkats will face in the first round of the Women's National Invitational post-season tournament. The WNIT marks the Kats' second appearance in NCAA Division I women's basketball national post-season action.
