Shelbi Tucker and Tiffany Castillo both blasted home runs to lead Sam Houston to a 6-4 victory over Lamar to avoid a sweep by the Cardinals in this weekend's Southland Conference softball matchup in Beaumont.
Castillo started things for the Bearkats in the first inning with a double. She scored on an RBI single by Hillary Adams.
Tucker put the Kats up 2-0 in the top of the second with a solo home run to left. Jessica Slater singled and scored on an error and Adams posted a second RBI single in the fifth to give the Kats a 4-1 lead.
Castillo added a two-run homer in the top of the seventh that proved to bring in the winning runs. Lamar struck back for three runs in the bottom of the seven.
Meme Quinn (4-4) earned the victory. Haley Baros picked up the save, closing out the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Bearkats now stand 16-17 for the year and 4-5 in Southland Conference action. Lamar dropped to 14-19 for the season and 5-4 in league play.
