NACOGDOCHES – The SFA Lumberjacks completed a season sweep of the Sam Houston State men's basketball team with a 57-42 win over the Kats on Thursday night.
The game got off to a slow start for both sides, with buckets and points coming at a premium. The Jacks didn't get a field goal until nine minutes into the game, and it was a 3-pointer to take the lead.
“I think both of these teams were scouted pretty well,” said head coach Jason Hooten. “It just came down making plays and they made more than we did.“
Neither team shot better than 30 percent in the first half and the Jacks took a 23-14 lead at the break. But the second half was a different story as SFA hit 10-of-16 from the field.
“I thought defensively we played good enough to win,” Hooten said. “We just didn't make they shots tonight. We have to now get ourselves prepared for Northwestern State and get going in the right direction for Katy.”
James Thomas was the only Bearkat in double figures with 10 points. He was also the leader with five rebounds.
The Kats will wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Northwestern State, before turning their attention to the Southland Conference tournament in Katy. They will open up Wednesday night.
