Quillin beat out McNeese State senior La'Shantena Rounds (1796) and Southeastern Louisiana freshman Jermisha Frazier (169-7), who finished second and third, respectively.
Sam Houston State senior Matt Johnson has the lead in the men's decathlon at the halfway point. The Bearkat won the 100 meters (10.91), long jump (22-8.5), shot put (43-3.75) and 400 meters (49.47) and finished second in the high jump (6-1.25) to score 3,873 points through five events.
Allyson Pettit placed fourth in the women's hepthalon.
Stephen F. Austin sophomore Cody Rhodes, who beat Johnson in the high jump (6-2.25), is in second place with 3,588 points. His junior teammate, Jamal Davis, is third with 3,588 points.
Opening day action came to a grinding halt late in the morning when severe weather moved into the area interrupting the multi events and forcing a five-hour weather delay.
But the sky cleared and the sun came out, allowing the day's other finals – the men's and women's hammer throw – to be contested.
In the men's hammer throw, Sam Houston State junior Trevor Sealy finished second (196-11).
McNeese State leads both the men's and women's team standings through two events. The men have scored 28 points and are followed by Stephen F. Austin (16 points), Sam Houston State (14) and Lamar (11) among the teams that have double-figure totals after the opening day. In the women's championship race, McNeese has a one-point lead, 15-14, on Sam Houston State. Southeastern Louisiana (11) and Central Arkansas (10) have also scored in double figures.
The meet continues Saturday with the conclusion of the multi events. Field event finals in the men's and women's long jump, shot put and javelin beginning at 1 p.m. and preliminaries of running events starting at 3 p.m. The championships conclude Sunday.
