
Charles White advances in NCAA triple jump

Charles White of Sam Houston produced a triple jump of 51 feet, three-and-a-half inches to finish 12th in the NCAA West Preliminary in Austin, earning a spot at the national outdoor championships in Oregon in June.
White will be making his second appearance in the NCAA national outdoor track and field finals. He finished 17th in 2012 triple jump.
White's teammate Karique Stephen placed 18th in the NCAA West triple jump competition with a mark of 50 feet, 10 inches.
A year ago at the West Preliminary meet, White set the Sam Houston school record of 51 feet, 10.5 inches to advance to nationals.
In other action for the Bearkats Saturday, Trevor Sealy and Brek Christensen placed 15th and 23rd, respectively, in the hammer throw with distances of 203 feet, two inches and 197 feet.
Sam Houston's Matt Johnson and Matthew Viverette both ran 14.69 in the 110 meter hurdles to tie for 37th place in the Bearkats' first action Friday at the NCAA West Preliminary round in Austin.
Due to rain and lightning, day two of the NCAA West Preliminary Round was delayed from 2 p.m. until the early evening. After the delay Jarrick Wright placed 24th in the quarterfinals of the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.79.
Wright earned his spot in the quarterfinals Thursday by finishing second in his heat with a 10.47 seconds clocking. The mark was the 12th best in the first round.
In women's action Friday, Shelbie Zotyka placed 28th in the women's pole vault with a mark of 12 feet.
Thursday Kristen Mitchell placed fifth in his heat of the 100 meters with a time of 10.34. He finished 31st in the competition.
Matt Viverette of Sam Houston just missed advancing to the quarterfinals of the 400 meter hurdles.
Viverette ran 52.29 to finish fourth in his heat behind Keaton Rickels of Iowa (51.28).
He finished with the 25th best time in the event, missing the cut by .07 seconds. Bret Scheve of Boise State was the final quarterfinal qualifier with a time of 52.22.
