12 Bearkats Named Preseason All-Southland

Twelve Sam Houston State University student-athletes have been named to the 2013 Southland Conference football preseason all-league team.
The league office announced the preseason honor squad Wednesday, a week ahead of Southland Football Media Day July 24 at L'auberge Resort in Lake Charles, La.
Four of the conference's individual award winners from last year are back, including Sam Houston State senior Timothy Flanders, the league's two-time player of the year.
Offensive lineman Donald Jackson III, wide receiver/wildkat back Richard Sincere, defensive lineman Gary Lorance, linebacker Eric Fieilo, cornerback Bookie Sneed and wide receiver/return specialist Torrance Williams join Flanders as preseason All-Southland first team selections.
Quarterback Brian Bell, wide receiver Chance Nelson, offensive lineman Matt Boyles, defensive lineman Jarrett Brown and linebacker Jesse Beauchamp are second team honorees.
Sam Houston is one of three teams to place 12 student-athletes on the preseason all-conference team. The other two are McNeese State and Central Arkansas.
Stephen F. Austin has seven all-conference selections followed by Lamar and Southeastern Louisiana both with five. Nicholls is next with three while Northwestern State completes the preseason all-conference teams with two selections.
Sam Houston State returns 11 starters from a team that advanced to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game in Frisco, Texas, for the second consecutive year after claiming its fifth Southland Conference championship. First-team all-conference selections returning for the Bearkats are running back Flanders and “wildkat” Richard Sincere.
Flanders, one of the nation's top returning running backs and a top candidate for the Walter Payton Award, led the league in rushing with 109.5 yards per game. He also led the league with 10 100-yard games, including a season-high 231-yard rushing performance in the national semifinals against Eastern Washington. He was second in the league with 1,770 all-purpose yards thanks to rushes totaling 1,642 and receiving yards totaling 128.
Flanders averaged 118.0 all-purpose yards in the Bearkats' 15 games. Flanders led the league in rushing, rush attempts (288), rushing yards (1,642), yards per carry (6.3) and rushing touchdowns (17) while ranking second in touchdown scoring (7.2 points per game).
Sincere also put together another great campaign last season, finishing toward the top 10 in several offensive categories. Sincere was third in the league in yards per carry (5.7), fifth in rushing yards (607) and 10th in yards per game (40.5).
Jackson was named to College Sports Journal's FCS Freshman all-America squad in 2012 after starting the final 11 games for the league champion Bearkats. Lorance is a three-year letterman with 34 career starts who has earned all-Southland honors the past two years.
Fieilo, who red-shirted in 2012, has totaled 105 career tackles and ranked second on the 2011 championship team in tackles for losses.
Sneed is a two-time all-Southland selection who has started 39 games in the Bearkat secondary. He has totaled 147 tackles and eight interceptions. Williams has 18 career starts at wide receiver and has rolled up 1,294 career all-purpose yards.
Bell stands as Sam Houston's all-time “winningest” quarterback after leading the team to 30 victories in 38 starts. He stands as the Kats' all-time leader in passing yards (6,165), passing touchdowns (52) and total offense yards (7,980).
Nelson was the team's second leading receiver as a freshman in 2012 with 35 catches for 671 yards and nine touchdowns. Boyles has started 16 games in an offensive line that has paved the wave for Sam Houston's nationally-ranked offensive attack.
Brown is a two-year starter with 12 career tackles for losses and nine quarterback saves. Beauchamp was Sam Houston's second-leading tackler in 2012 with 94 stops.
The conference's preseason head coaches' poll will be announced July 24 at media day.
