Sam Houston State head soccer coach Tom Brown recently attended an event hosted by the Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer specializing in sports science.
The Seattle Sounders FC Sports Science Mentorship Weekend featured speakers from the Sounders, Manchester United of the English Premier League, Bayern Munich in Germany and Ajax FC from the Netherlands.
“Attendees came from all different areas: college coaches and strength and conditioning coaches from different sports, professional strength and conditioning coaches from different professional team and sports, and professionals in physical therapy and fitness. Some of the best learning opportunities came from the time we had to interact with others about their experiences and knowledge.”
Topics included utilizing how GPS technology is used to measure mechanical load in soccer today, the latest strategies for improving the performance potential of soccer players at the college and youth level and utilizing stress management methods to increase athlete's ability to recover.
“This was a terrific experience to hear lectures from some of the best minds in the sports science and team performance area in soccer,” Brown said. “Lectures came from both domestic and international professional soccer, colleges and professionals who work with athletes in private business. This is something I will definitely have on my calendar for next year.”
Also, strength and training topics including weekly and monthly training planning, weekly and monthly planning of freshness and fitness and Strength training and corrective exercise ideas for team training on-field versus off-field, were discussed.
“This will help our team as we plan our season and try to manage fatigue in a very compact season. Some of these ideas are very important as I work with (strength) Coach (Kyle) Speer to help us prepare the team as well as we can.”
The Bearkats will open the season at home on August 25 against Texas Southern.
