Wells-Gibson & Gray Preseason All-SLC

Sam Houston's Deveney Wells-Gibson and Tayler Gray are two of the 18 student-athletes who have been voted to the 2013 All-Southland Conference preseason volleyball team, the league announced Tuesday.
Wells-Gibson, an outside hitter from San Antonio, Texas, led Sam Houston to its first 20-win season since 2009 and a share of the regular-season conference title last year.
Wells-Gibson finished second in the conference in kills (466), kills per set (4.07), eighth in service set (0.32) and 10th in digs per set (3.28) on her way to earning conference player of the year honors.
Collins, a three-time all-conference representative also received preseason first-team all-conference recognition. In 2010, she was the first player in league history to be named conference freshman and setter of the year in the same season. The senior from Pearland, Texas, is a two-time setter of the year recipient (2010, 12) and led the conference in assists per set (12.42), which ranked third nationally last season.
Grey also earned first-team honors. A setter from Huntsville, she was a second-team all-conference selection last year. She finished second in the conference in assist per set (10.92), eighth in digs per set (3.54) and 11th in service aces (34).
Wells-Gibson, Gray and senior middle blocker Haley Neisler all return as starters for the Bearkats who earned the Southland championship last year with a 15-3 league mark. The Kats ended the season 21-13 for the year.
Sam Houston opens its 2013 schedule August 30 with a trip to Appalachian State for a two-day tournament. The Bearkats' first home match will be Tuesday, Sept. 3, when SHSU plays host to Texas State at 7 p.m. at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
