With the third and final scrimmage of 2013 Sam Houston football preseason camp, Bearkat head coach Willie Fritz is happy with the progress the two-time defending Southland Conference champions are making.
“Overall, for August 21, I thought we looked pretty sharp,” Fritz said of the 64-play scrimmage. “We worked a lot on communication between the coaches in the press box and on the bench with the players on the field and got some of the kinks out.”
Sam Houston opens the season with a home matchup with Houston Baptist Saturday Aug. 31 at 6 p.m.
“We've been working on all the different situations you can face in a game and there's a bunch of them,” Fritz said. “You want to expose everyone to those situations in practice so they know what to do.”
Sam Houston returns 40 lettermen from last year's squad.
“We've got about eight or nine players who only started two or three games or none at all for us,” Fritz added. “We want to make sure they know what to do. It's good that we start off with a home game and can get them some experience.”
