Bearkats travel to Nicholls

The Sam Houston volleyball team looks to continue a strong start in 2013 Southland Conference Thursday when the Bearkats begin a south Louisiana road trip at Nicholls.
The defending league champions, SHSU opened Southland action last Friday with a three-set victory over the Lamar Cardinals. The Kats stand 4-6 after the first three weeks of the regular season.
Nicholls brings a 3-7 record into the match, the conference opener for the Colonels.
Both teams own a pair of wins over Southwestern Athletic Conference teams. The Kats downed Texas Southern and Jackson State, both in three sets. Nicholls has wins over Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State. Sam Houston 's other non-conference win came over Loyola.
Junior Deveney Wells-Gibson leads the Bearkat front line with 127 kills (3.85 per set this season). Senior Haley Neisler has totaled 62 kills (2.38) while freshman Shelby Genung has added 49 (1.58).
Freshman libero Breanna Homer earned Southland Conference “Defensive Player of the Week” honors last weekend. She is averaging 3.85 digs per set. Senior setter Tayler Gray is adding 3.09 per set.
Kayla Burning is the Colonels' top offensive threat with 117 kills this season.
Following the Thursday night action at Nicholls, the Bearkats will complete their road trip Saturday with a match at McNeese State.
The next home action for the Sam Houston volleyball team is a 7 p.m. contest with A&M-Corpus Christi at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum Thursday, Sept. 26.
