SAN ANTONIO -- Three first half goals led Sam Houston State to a 3-1 win over Incarnate Word and their first Southland Conference women's soccer win of the season.
It took the Bearkats (3-5-1, 1-1) just over 40 minutes to open the scoring but once they did there were a flurry of goals before halftime.
Senior midfielder Tricia Mallory got the scoring started with a goal from a corner kick by Shelby McDaniel. Mallory has two goals this season and both have come on a corner.
Freshman Shannon Shields put in the second goal two and a half minutes later when she chipped the keeper.
The Kats final goal came just 48 seconds before the interval, again from a Shelby McDaniel corner kick. Freshman Jacey Hamilton was on the receiving end of the set play to head into the net.
“I thought we were very confident in attack today and it paid off for us with three goals,” said Bearkat coach Tom Brown. “The team was very disappointed in our effort on Friday and they were determined to make a change. A lot of players contributed to this win and we hope to build on this throughout the season.”
Goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton made three saves in 69 minutes in net and Magen Ross played the final 20 minutes.
Next up for the Bearkats is at McNeese State Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m.
