Fresh off their scheduled bye week, the Sam Houston men's and women's track and field squads make the short trip down I-45 for the second time this season and will compete in the Howie Ryan Invitational Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1 on the campus of the University of Houston.
“We're kind of getting into the meaty part of the season right now,” head coach David Self said. “Coming off a scheduled off week, we did that so we could get two solid weeks of training in, come back and have this meet.”
This will also be the first two-day meet of the season for the Bearkats, providing Self's squad the opportunity to compete in a variety of events.
“We're doing a lot of events spread over two days,” Self said. “We've got several kids who are doing quite a few different events but we still want to make sure they understand we're here to compete and get after it and do some good things.”
In total, the meet will consist of 60 different events split amongst the categories of combined, Friday field, Friday running, Saturday field and Saturday running.
In their last action two weeks ago, the Kats captured two second-place team finishes at the Texas A&M 12 Team Invite. In that meet, Sam Houston secured a combined 17 top three finishes including Rodney Jones's time of 47.18 in the 400m dash, good enough for second in school history.
