Huskies Visit for 1:30 p.m. doubleheader

Both the Sam Houston men's and women's basketball look to continue their success on their home floor at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum Saturday afternoon.
The Bearkats play host to Houston Baptist in a men's and women's doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The SHSU men are 6-0 this season at Johnson while the women are 5-2 in the dome. The women tip off at 1:30 p.m. and the men at 3:45 p.m.
Both are coming off thrilling victories Thursday night against A&M-Corpus Christi. The women rallied for a 79-76 victory over the Islanders while the men held off a late charge to 78-74.
The Bearkat men enter in second place in the Southland Conference race with a 6-2 league mark. Sam Houston stands as one of only four teams in the league with double digit victory totals. The men are 14-6 for the year.
Jabari Peters (13.3 points per game), Paul Baxter (11.7) and Kaheem Ransom (11.3) all sport double figure scoring averages in Southland play. Michael Holyfield (9.3) is close. The 6-11 junior leads the Kats in rebounding with 7.8 per contest including a career high 16 boards against A&M-Corpus Christi.
Houston Baptist enters the game 4-17 for the year and 1-8 in conference games. Rob Lewis and Cody Joyce lead the Huskies, averaging 10.7 and 10.5 points per game, respectively.
Angela Beadle and Jasmine Johnson continue to lead the SHSU women with scoring marks of 15.7 and 12.3 points, respectively. Beadle is the league' top rebounder with a 9.9 season average.
The Sam Houston women stand 10-10 for the year and 5-4 in league action.
Jazmin Johnson, Nyha Carter and Amanda Barnes join Beadle and Johnson as starters. The Bearkat bench is giving the team plenty of support as well with Taylor Dorsey, Kristana Smith, Jasmine Robinson, Morghen Day, Maggie Lorenz and Summer Fife providing valuable minutes.
Sam Houston defeated Houston Baptist in a non-conference game in November in Huntsville. The Bearkats led by just a basket, 36-34, at intermission. But, led by Carter and Dorsey who each scored 17 points. The SHSU women ran away with the game in second half for an 85-68 victory.
Erin Marrachan led HBU with 21 points in the tilt.
KHVL 104.7 FM will carry a live broadcast of the women's game. KSAM 101.7 FM will broadcast the men.
