Five Bearkats Named Academic All-Southland

Sam Houston State placed five players on the 2013 Academic All-Southland Conference football team to lead the league in all-academic selections.
Quarterback Brian Bell, wide receiver Torrance Williams, running backs Timothy Flanders and Keshawn Hill and linebacker Eric Fieilo all were honored by selection to the Academic All-Southland squad.
The All-Academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors from each Southland Conference university.
Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
Hill is receiving Academic All-Southland honors for the second year in a row. The junior from Klein totaled 987 all-purpose yards for the Bearkats in 2013, rushing for 587 yards and eight touchdowns and returning kickoffs for 424 yards. The Klein product holds a 3.32 overall GPA as a general business major.
Bell stands as Sam Houston's all-time leader in passing and total offense yardage. The China Spring senior holds an overall 3.08 GPA as a kinesiology major.
Flanders, a senior from Midwest City, Oklahoma, is the only Bearkat to earn All-Southland first team four consecutive years. He is the only Southland back ever to gain more than 5,000 career rushing yards. His career overall GPA is 3.05 as a management information systems.
Torrance Williams, a senior from Waco, became the second Bearkat to earn All-Southland honors at two positions in the same year. Williams is a first team choice at both wide receiver and punt return specialist. He owns a 3.00 overall GPA as a criminal justice.
Senior linebacker Eric Fieilo, a former Euless Trinity star, led the Bearkats in tackles this season to earn first team All-Southland honors. He holds a 3.00 career GPA as a criminal justice major.
