The Sam Houston volleyball team looks to up their perfect record on their home floor at Bernard G. Johnson to 6-0 when they play host to Abilene Christian University Saturday.
The Bearkats and the Wildcats meet at 11 a.m. to start homecoming athletic activities.
Sam Houston defeated Incarnate Word in three sets Thursday night in the squad's first home match since August 30. The Kats bring a 10-7 season mark into Saturday's contest while ACU entered 2-16. The SHSU women rank fourth in the young Southland Conference race with a 3-1 league record. The Wildcats are 0-5 in the Southland.
But head coach Brenda Gray knows that, despite the record, the visitors from Abilene will be a tough opponent. ACU has gone five sets with four of their last five opponents.
“We prepare the same for every opponent,” Gray said. “We work on what they're bringing us but we always make sure that we're taking care of our side. We talk all the time about protecting our house. We have to keep working hard and remember where we are.”
Senior outside hitter, a three-time Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, continues to dominate. Wells-Gibson leads the Southland with 4.67 kills per set. Freshman Jordyn Vaughn totaled 12 kills in Thursday's 25-14 25-16 25-12 win over UIW.
Setter Meredith Griffith stands second in the Southland with 10.46 assists per set. Libero Claire Kilpatrick ranks as the team leader in digs with a 3.83 average.
“Thursday, a lot of our girls were really clicking offensively,” Gray said. “Everybody was doing their part.”
Abilene Christian is led by outside hitter Jennifer Wooten who ranks fourth in the league with 3.71 kills per set.
Following the ACU match Saturday, the Bearkats will complete their three-match home stand with a Tuesday rematch with Lamar at 6:30 p.m. The Cardinals hand the SHSU women their only conference loss of the season in the league opener in five sets in Beaumont.
