Southland Conference kills leader Deveney Wells-Gibson totaled 20 Tuesday night to lead Sam Houston to a four-set volleyball victory over Lamar at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
Carling Urben added 14 kills for the Bearkats as the SHSU women posted a 25-21 25-22 27-29 26-24 victory over the Cardinals to up their season mark to 12-7 and their league record to 5-1.
Lamar drops to 3-15 for the year and 3-3 in Southland Conference. The Sam Houston win avenged a five-set loss to the Cardinals in Beaumont two-and-a-half weeks ago.
Chelsea Grant led the Cards with 18 kills and Cortney Moore added 11. Moore also posted eight blocks including three solos.
SHSU setter Michelle Griffith assisted on 56 of the Kats' 65 kills. Libero Claire Kilpatrick totaled 30 digs and outside hitter Breanna Homer added 20. LU libero Erika Rojas produced 28 digs.
The Bearkats were fast out of the gate, racing to a 23-13 lead in the first set. But, in a portent of things to come, Lamar roared back, winning eight of the next 10 points before Sam Houston finally put away the first stanza.
The rest of the match was a battle with seven ties in the second set, 17 ties and seven lead changes in the third and 15 ties and four lead changes in the fourth set.
Sam Houston had four set points to make the win a three-setter but Lamar pulled out its only set victory of the night after an Kat attack error and a service ace by Chelsea Grant.
On the Kats' second match point in the four stanza, a service ace by Wells-Gibson brought the Bearkats a victory. Sam Houston now stands 7-0 on their home floor.
Next action for Sam Houston will be a road match Saturday at Central Arkansas.
