Sam Houston volleyball looks to get back on the winning track Thursday night as the Bearkats take on Nicholls at 6:30 p.m. in Stopher Gymnasium in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
The Kats fell in their Southland Conference opener at Lamar last Saturday afternoon. Jumping out to a 26-25 26-21 two set lead, the SHSU women faltered as the Cardinals roared back to take the final three sets 25-22 25-17 16-14.
Sam Houston stands 7-7 on the season. The Kats face an improved Nicholls team that owns a 5-10 season record and stands 1-1 in conference play. The five victories so far equal the Colonels' victory total from 2013. Nicholls is coming off of a 3-0 defeat of Northwestern State on Saturday, securing the first home victory and conference victory of the season.
Deveney Wells-Gibson leads the Bearcats with 241 kills on the season, while Claire Kilpatrick has a team-high 208 digs. Shelby Genung has a team-leading 34 blocks and Michelle Griffith leads the squad in assists with 563 this year.
For Nicholls, Kaci Eaton is ranked second in the Southland in kills with a team-high 211 this year. She is second on the team in digs with 144 through 15 games. Kalynn Egea is second in the conference in both digs (296) and digs per set (5.92).
The match in Thibodaux is the first of two road encounters for the Bearkats this weekend. Sam Houston takes on McNeese State in Lake Charles Saturday afternoon.
Thursday's match marks Sam Houston's 11th consecutive match on the road. Since going 4-0 to win the SHSU Invitational at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum August 30-31, the Kats have played in tournaments in Denver, Houston and Fort Worth.
Sam Houston finally returns home to play host to Incarnate Word Thursday, Oct. 9, in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
