Resurfacing of the track at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium will begin Monday, October 27, with the removal of the old surface.
The nine-time Southland Conference champion Sam Houston track team will be getting a new BBS100 system which is a black mat and structural spray of 13mm in thickness. The long jump, triple jump and pole vault box surfaces also will be replaced.
The work is being done by Beynon Sports Surfaces
“The resurfacing is part of our efforts to continue to upgrade and improve the athletic facilities here at Sam Houston State,” Director of Athletics Bobby Williams said. “The work will be done in phases to accommodate both track and football seasons. With women's championships both indoors and outdoors last season and seven other Southland titles since 2005, we're proud of the program's success.”
Following the removal of the current surface, asphalt work will begin. Once the new asphalt surface is poured, it will need to cure for 28 days before the new track surface can be installed.
“The new track surface will not be installed until football season is over,” Williams said. “For our last home game against Central Arkansas as well as any potential playoff games, only the black asphalt surface will have been poured and be visible.
“Since we have three weeks between home games after this Saturday, work is beginning now so as to not inconvenience our track teams during their in-season competition period.”
Because of the construction, Bowers Stadium will not be available for any high school football playoff games this year.
Williams noted that removal of the existing surface and pouring of the asphalt will not inconvenience football practice since they now practice in the mornings. Work will be done on the track from 11:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. each day until the asphalt has been poured.
Once football season has been completed, it will take approximately two weeks to complete the installation of the new track surface. Barring weather or other delays, the new surface is expected to be ready when the track teams returns in January to begin practice for its indoor season.
