Pink Out at Bowers Stadium Saturday

When the Bearkats take the field Saturday for their 3 p.m. contest with Abilene Christian, the football team will be wearing pink shoelaces and wrist bands as part of the eighth annual “Pink Out” at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium.
“Pink Out” is an effort by Zeta Tau Alpha to raise awareness for breast cancer prevention. Each fall, for the past seven seasons, the Bearkats have had a “Pink Out” game to help this cause.
“Our players are very aware of what 'Pink Out' is all about,” SHSU head football coach K. C. Keeler said. “It's a great cause. I lost a brother to cancer. There are families of many of our players and staff have been touched by breast cancer. Breast cancer awareness is a very important cause and we want to do our part.”
Various activities surround “Pink Out” including T-shirt sales to raise money for breast cancer research and recognition of breast cancer survivors at halftime.
Dustin Moehlig, senior wide receiver and special teams player for the Kats, sums up the feelings of the team about the special day.
“Pink Out is especially important to me because my grandmother is a breast cancer survivor,” Moehlig said. “She fought hard to beat cancer. As players, we want to go out and fight as hard as we can to honor that spirit.
"Some members of our team have family or friends who fought hard but weren't able to beat the disease. We're playing for them as well. If we can save a life by making someone aware of the importance of getting a checkup, then we've done something special.”
“Pink Out” at Bowers Stadium Saturday is just one of many efforts by student-athletes at Sam Houston to support awareness of breast cancer prevention.
The Bearkat volleyball team already has had a “Dig Pink” game and the same is planned for several other of the Sam Houston sports teams.
