Alonzo gives Kats 2-1 win over Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI -- With Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christ tied 1-1 and time winding down, junior forward Ashley Alonzo blasted a shot from just inside the box that hit the cross bar and went in to give the Bearkats a 2-1 win. The win improved the Kats to 6-2 in Southland play and ties them for the most league wins in a season in school history.

“It was good to get this win,” head coach Tom Brown said. “Texas A&M-Corpus Christi played very well and put us under pressure. We battled back after giving up the goal and created some chances. Alonzo hit a rocket to win the game.”

Senior midfielder Madison Bible, who scored her first career goal in last week's 1-0 win over Central Arkansas, got herself on the score sheet again. Shelby McDaniel headed a great pass to lead Bible into the box and she slotted it past the Islander goalkeeper from about 10 yards out.

The Bearkats took a 1-0 lead into halftime but just three minutes after the break the Islanders leveled the match. Alyssa Miller scored on a pass from Aulona Velaj to equalize.

Sam Houston's game-winning goal came after a great piece of play that started near the halfway line. Johnson shrugged off a defender and passed to Mariah Titus who played a pass to Bible. The senior made a powerful run through the midfield and sprayed the ball wide to Alonzo who took one touch to set herself and fired a laser off the underside of the bar and in.

With just over 10 minutes remaining the Kats were able to take the air out of the match and the Islanders managed just one more shot.

SHSU outshot the Islanders 16-10 in the match. The Kats got a far greater percentage on target with 11 shots on frame while AMCC had just three.

The Kats have scored a school-record 20 goals through the first eight games of the league slate. The previous record was 18 goals in 2007 (nine games) and 2013 (12 games).

For the second time this season Sam Houston has won three-straight Southland games, tying a school record.

The Bearkats will take their win streak to Hammond, La. to play Southeastern Louisiana Sunday at 1:00 p.m. A win Sunday would give SHSU its highest ever league win total.
